Liberating Leadership From Decades of Neglect and Abuse

“For more years than I care to number, I have been observing leaders – all sorts of leaders from all walks of life, though mostly from business and politics. I have also coached, mentored and lectured business leaders in companies from Shanghai to San Francisco and from Hong Kong to The Hague, and I have found great leaders, good leaders and some who hardly deserve the title.

As all students of the leader/follower relationship, I have pondered: “Just what is it that sets the truly great leaders apart from the rest? And even more fundamentally, how do we as followers choose our leaders? What attracts us to them and binds us to their example?”

I humbly submit what I call 10 principles, which, if followed, I believe give us a very good chance of being effective leaders, at whatever level and in whatever context we find ourselves leading. I believe that the power of these 10 principles will be self-evident – leaders will enjoy leading and followers will follow with enthusiasm.

Of course, lots of other factors need to arrange themselves fortuitously if any enterprise is to be wholly successful – but it is clear that when things go wrong, as they often do, most leaders need look no further than their own actions and attitudes to find the reason for such failure. Hence the need to learn more and more about successful leadership, is something every leader needs to commit to, no matter how high he/she has risen and how far he/she has travelled.”

The Living Leader Senior Partner

About Rob

Rob is a specialist in the philosophy and psychology of leadership. He has taught and coached leaders from a wide variety of businesses and other organisations in more than a dozen countries on 4 continents. His message is that it is critical to “get leadership right” as the consequences of “getting it wrong” are tragic and obvious.

Before moving with his family to the UK in 1999, Rob’s career included a Regional Directorship of Western Cape Youth for Christ in South Africa, as well as time as a Senior Staff Officer in the South Africa defence Force and 15 years in secondary education. He was the Senior Deputy Headmaster of one of the top 100 schools in the country and Regional President of the South African Teachers’ Association.

On moving to the UK, Rob worked as head of training for a large recruitment business in the City, before establishing his own consultancy. He presented the Penny Ferguson Personal Leadership Programme some 90 times, before accepting a position as Visiting Executive Fellow at Henley Business School. He subsequently joined Cass Business School (City of London University) where he facilitated modules on personal leadership for the top 700 executives of Transport of London and the top 165 of the UK Department for Transport. For 10 years he also facilitated the flagship leadership programme for the principals of the global engineering and architecture giant, ARUP. He was also for 10 years a director of the Sellick Partnership, a recruitment business based in Manchester.

Rob has acted as lecturer, coach and counsellor across a wide spectrum of organisations including KPMG, Deloittes, Royal Bank of Scotland, Randstadt, Staples, The Open University, Irish Court Services, FCA, Caterpillar Marine and the Rank Group.

This is a leadership course like no other and produces startling results and a quantifiable return on investment that not only can be measured but is visible. What do I mean by that? – for me it delivers greater engagement, with leaders setting the tone for behaviour and better bosses inspiring employees through engagement and increased interaction including the tech generation. It is an amazing product and I have used it four times in different organisations and its impact and results always astounds me.

Ben Slater
CEO Bow and Arrow

I first saw Penny Ferguson in action at a leadership breakfast in Australia. I learned more in those 30 minutes than I had from any leadership course, book or article. This lady is THE guru, sage and authority on the subject of how to create, delegate and sustain a high performing culture. Straight after the breakfast, I signed my top team to her Programme. It was so effective that we subsequently decided that every single person in the company (50+) should attend the seminar. They have. The results have been extraordinary.

Paul Stobart
CEO, Zen internet

In my experience, Penny Ferguson is far and away the best and most inspirational speaker I have ever heard on the all-important subject of leadership. I have been fortunate enough to attend her leadership programme, The Living Leader, multiple times and I have seen first hand the transformative effect the programme can have on leaders. For Penny, and I agree with her, leadership is the single biggest driver of business success; get it right and businesses flourish, get it wrong and businesses struggle. Her approach is refreshing, innovative and inspiring. Anyone who is interested in leadership and believes in its transformative power should listen to what Penny and her team at Living Leader have to say …

Lesley Cotton
Divisional Human Resources Director, P & O Ferries

It is the most effective leadership behavioural change programme that I have been involved in across my career, for a number of reasons: There are clear learnings as to how personal behavioural change links to business results;-The programme is aligned to driving business performance; The change in team dynamics is evident post the programme.

Gordon Pitman
Chief HR Officer, GKN Aerospace

Having experience the Living Leader Program myself many years ago and used many of the things I learned to shape my personal leadership perspective it felt like the right time to introduce Penny Ferguson to GKN Aerospace. We introduced the Living Leader Program as part of our transformation journey to equip and enable leaders across the business to think differently about the culture they had created and the impact it was having on their teams, their business and our customers. Over 200 leaders have now experienced the program and although early days, the leadership skills they have learnt are helping them drive true behaviour change and improve their business results.
